And no termites and no fleas, but yes, those no-see-ums were horrid.

So why did we have spiders, but no snakes, I wonder?

No snakes. Never saw a turtle. Somewhere in the recesses of my files I have a photo of a mosquito that was the length of the teeth end of a house key (we held the key up for comparison). I lived in Glennallen and our flies weren't too bad, but the mosquitoes and the no-see-ums were killer. The big mosquitoes weren't so bad, you could usually catch 'em (one handed if you'd been around a while) before they bit you, but there were littler guys that were speedy and vicious.

What a great post. Thanks for sharing them with us!

She told Joel Wells in May 1962, "I didn't recognize the television version. Gene Kelly played Mr. Shiftlet and for the idiot daughter they got some young actress who had just been voted one of the ten most beautiful women in the world, and they changed the ending just a bit by having Shiftlet suddenly get a conscience and come back for the girl."

Found on page 90 of "Conversations with Flannery O'Connor".
